The GOP Bought Ken Paxton a Fire Hose. He's Still Underwater.

Republican mega-donors just poured nearly $54 million into a Senate candidate they spent the spring calling an infidelity risk. Six weeks out, Texas voters aren't buying what the money is selling.

The GOP Bought Ken Paxton a Fire Hose. He's Still Underwater.

Money is the confession the powerful never mean to make. Watch where it flows, and you learn what the party truly believes about its own candidate. This week the receipts arrived, and they scream panic.

Nearly fifty-four million dollars. In one filing. (cite index="1">The Austin-based Texas PAC, an affiliate of the Senate Leadership Fund tied to Majority Leader John Thune, donated more than $53.8 million to Paxton's campaign, according to FEC filings, and reserved more than $51 million in ads across Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. This is not a vote of confidence. This is triage.

Why triage? Because the numbers underneath are grim. (cite index="1">As of the end of June, Talarico's campaign held more than $21.5 million on hand against less than $1.8 million for Paxton. The Attorney General, running for the United States Senate, was broke. The cavalry that rode in is the same establishment that spent the primary knifing him. (cite index="1">The National Republican Senatorial Committee attacked Paxton for alleged infidelity during his race against John Cornyn, then turned around and set up a joint fundraising committee with him in June. Principle, meet expedience. Expedience wins in a landslide.

And the spigots keep opening. (cite index="3">Before the latest $5 million from Trump's MAGA Inc., FEC filings show the super PAC had already poured $10 million into Paxton's campaign through the firm Del Ray Media, while Elon Musk's America PAC has spent over $2 million supporting him. Tens of millions, and for what? (cite index="2">The recent funding advantage has not translated into success among voters: Talarico leads across all major polls six weeks out, with margins ranging from a healthy Democratic edge to a tighter contest by November 3. You can gold-plate a sinking ship. It still sinks.

Here is the tell nobody at the SLF will say out loud. (cite index="2">By the New York Times' tally, Paxton has not led a poll since an August 9-10 Emerson survey giving him a single point. (cite index="4">One survey conducted September 8-11 and published this week found Talarico up six, 49 to 43, outside the pollster's margin of error. Paxton's response to the polling was the oldest dodge in the book. (cite index="4">Asked about it on Fox News, he said he doesn't trust all these polls. Of course not. The scoreboard is rude.

Then there is the small matter of the people who know him best. (cite index="5">Dan Cogdell, the Houston attorney who defended Paxton through his 2023 impeachment and his long-running securities fraud case, endorsed Talarico, saying his former client is more focused on serving Trump than Texans and that the relationship ended "at the courthouse door." When your own defense lawyer, the man paid to believe in you, walks to the other podium, that is not opposition research. That is character reference in reverse.

And the family-values brand? Quietly filed away where the cameras can't reach. (cite index="6">Ken and Angela Paxton pulled their divorce case off the trial docket, with lawyers citing "substantial progress toward an amicable resolution," sparing the campaign a public airing of the adultery allegations Angela made when she filed in July 2025 on "biblical grounds." A public trial would have handed opposition researchers weeks of ammunition. The tent got folded before the show could start.

So here is the accounting. A party that called him an infidelity risk in the spring is spending like his life depends on it in the fall, because it does. The money bought airtime. It did not buy belief. When you have to spend nearly $54 million to prop up a man your own donors don't trust and your own polls say is losing, you haven't found a winner. You've found a liability with good ad placement. MUCK YOU, and pass the AdImpact report.
