What the Rogues' Gallery is

The Rogues' Gallery is a set of standing files on people who hold or seek public power. Each file collects what is on the record about one person — campaign finance filings, court records, property and business documents, sworn testimony, and their own public statements — and keeps it in one place, with a source attached to every claim. The files are updated as new documents surface rather than rewritten when a story breaks.

A file exists here for one of two reasons. Either the person holds power that is not being examined closely anywhere else, or the public record about them is scattered across enough filings, dockets and jurisdictions that no ordinary reader would ever assemble it. Neither reason is partisan, and inclusion is not an accusation. Several of these files consist largely of documents the subject filed themselves.

What we publish. Primary documents and dated, sourced statements of fact. Where we characterise a document, the document is linked so a reader can check the characterisation. Where a subject has responded, the response is included in the file, and we correct the record when we are shown to be wrong. Where something is disputed or unproven, it is labelled as disputed rather than presented as established.

What we do not publish. Home addresses, family members who are not themselves involved, medical information, and material obtained unlawfully. We do not publish allegations we cannot source, and we do not treat an unproven claim as true because it is widely repeated. These files are First Amendment protected commentary on matters of public concern, and they are built to survive being read closely by the people they are about — which is the standard we hold them to.
